A Monks Haircut, the Tonsure. What’s up with that?

We’ve all seen that bizarre haircut Monks sport. It’s called the tonsure, derived from the Latin word, tondere, meaning to shear.

The haircut was meant to mark a certain stage in a religious journey which had deep emotional significance.

Maybe it’s the hairdresser in me but, I can think of much more interesting ways to cut someone’s hair as they climb up the spiritual ladder. I mean, what exactly is the tonsure representing? A halo? A sunny side up egg? What?

Hair has always been viewed as an adornment. One that can be used for sexual arousal, eroticism, and a means to attract the opposite sex.

The last thing a Monk would want, is to bring any sexual attention to themselves because of their celibacy vow. The tonsure, and it’s simply my opinion, achieves the goal of unattractiveness. It’s unknown who inspired the tonsure, but I tip my hat. Mission accomplished, well done!

Foundation for mature skin

Wearing foundation softens the appearance of fine lines, brightens skin, and hides discoloration that comes along with mature skin.

Choosing the right foundation and color are crucial to the outcome of younger looking skin.

Have you ever seen someone wearing the wrong shade of foundation and you can see a distinct line of demarcation along their jawline?

Picking the right shade will give you a natural look rather than a caked on look.

Mature skin needs color and concealment. When choosing a foundation, remember, it comes in two basic formulas, oil and water based. Water based foundations are sheer but don’t necessarily cover blotches or discoloration. Oil based foundation has the best coverage for evening out the skin.

Choosing the Right Shade:

For ruddy skin, Yellow based shades such as golden beige or honey beige are the most flattering.

For sallow complexions, Rose or ivory undertones look best.

Very pale skin, looks best in ivory, rather that yellow undertones, such as alabaster.

Always remember before applying foundation it is imperative to hydrate the face prior to using any foundation.

Seal your foundation with a loose or pressed powder geared for mature skin. Powders for mature skin contain more moisturizers and don’t make your skin look dry. Follow with blush. follow my next blog post on blush for mature skin!

Blush For Mature Skin

My last two blog posts, Conceal Age-related skin Imperfections and Mature Skin and Foundation, talked about the best way to conceal undereye dark circles, broken capillaries on the cheeks and choosing the best foundation for mature skin.

As we age older skin becomes more sallow. Blush can help mature skin recapture the rosiness of youth.

Blush comes in three forms: cream, powder and cream-powder. cream blush works best on dry skin because it adds a little more moisture. Powder blush is great for normal to oily skin, reducing shine and giving more holding power on the skin.

Warm shades of blush contain more yellow and red such as peach and pink. They are more forgiving on mature skin.

Gray or white haired look best in pink, rose, plum, mauve because it compliments cooler skin.

To minimize wrinkles, be sure to apply blush to the apples of your cheeks.

Conceal age-related imperfections

Aside

Under eye concealer erases dark circles and hides broken capillaries on the cheeks.

First and foremost, choose a concealer that is going to do its job. If you have dark circles, choosing a concealer with an orange or peach base helps to cut the purple undertones.

Always begin your routine with an undereye moisturizer to guarantee an even look and to help in concealing age-related imperfections. Using a little foundation, dab a little with your ring finger, in the inner eye area close to your nose and on the under eye crescent. Let dry.

Apply your concealer, in the same fashion right over the foundation. Always drag the concealer past the under-eye crescent to your cheekbone. Keep patting with your ring finger until the concealer is well blended. Let dry.

Here is the part that lots of people make a big mistake in, sealing your concealer with powder.

Pressed or Loose powder make the under-eye eye look dry, drawing attention to lines and wrinkles and all the other imperfections.  Instead, use a powder set. This is a specific product to seal in your concealer without having the product seep into fine lines. Using a sable brush, dust powder set over your concealer.

Huh? Glycolic Acid, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Salicylic Acid, on my skin?

Huh? Glycolic Acid, Beta Hydroxy Acid, Salicylic Acid, on my skin?

Get a simple answer to what this all means and the benefits for you.

With so many skincare products on the market it is difficult to choose what is best for your skin type. Let’s shed some light on these confusing terms. Just the word acid sounds scary but these three acids, Glycolic, Beta Hydroxy and Salicylic all serve a purpose.

Glycolic Acid is the most common over the counter anti-aging product ingredient. Derived from sugarcane, the chemicals found in Glycolic Acid sloughs off and exfoliates the build up of dead skin cells on the top layer of the skin.

The percentage of Glycolic Acid in a product determines how much benefit you will get from it. 10%, which is a low concentrate, won’t do much for fine lines but can make the skin smoother. A higher percentage of Glycolic Acid may stimulate the formation of collagen, which is the connective tissue in the skins second layer (dermis) that gives your skin its youthful plumpness and strength.

Dermatologists can offer a variety of products that contain 25% of Glycolic Acid, more likely to benefit aging skin. If skin becomes sensitive after using Glycolic Acid, try a gentler wrinkle fighter.

Salicylic Acid, also known as, Beta Hydroxy Acid, is found in the bark of willow and sweet birch trees. This Acid, works at much lower concentrations than Glycolic Acid.

Those battling breakouts along with wrinkles may want to use Salicylic Acid. Like Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid exfoliates the top layer of skin penetrating the pores liberating trapped dirt and oil that can lead to acne.

Margaret Vinci Heldt Creator of the Beehive Hairdo

I recently read the obituary of Margaret Vinci Heldt, the creator of the infamous Beehive hairdo. I love to commemorate the trail blazers of the Hairdressing profession.

mvh2

Margaret Vinci Heldt had been a salon owner when she won the National Coiffure Championship in 1954. The editors of Modern Beauty Shop Magazine asked Margaret if she would create a new hairdo for the up and coming season.

m9

While trying to be inspired in creating her new trend, Margaret Vinci Heldt spotted a hat of hers and got the inspiration she was looking for.

mvh5

Working on her mannequin, she teased and lacquered an updo in the shape of her hat and for an extra adornment she added a stick pin she had of a bee.

m7

When a reporter saw the final hairdo, he told Margaret that the hairdo reminded him of a beehive and asked if she minded if he called her new creation that.

In this photo taken Jan. 19, 2011, retired hairstylist Margaret Vinci Heldt, 92, is seen at her apartment in Elmhurst, Ill. Heldt developed "the beehive" hairdo when Modern Beauty Shop magazine was looking for a new design, something new and different to feature in its February 1960 issue. The black velvet hat on the table was the inspiration for the hairdo. (AP Photo/Caryn Rousseau)

The beehive today is still popular and worn by many celebrities. Later the beehive was also called the B-52 because of the resemblance in silhouette to the conical nose of the Boeing B-52 bomber airplane.

Margaret was one of the Cosmetology icons that deserve the remembrance and respect that she worked so hard for throughout her career.

Paraffin Wax Treatments

Paraffin wax treatments are beneficial to the skin in providing hydration. Paraffin wax is a mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from crude petroleum used to make candles, wax paper, lubricants and waterproof coatings.

p7

Having a professional paraffin treatment can serve many benefits in hydrating dry skin. The wax works by locking-in moisture and the heat causes blood circulation and opens pores.p2

p3

When doing the hands or feet the warmed wax is applied and a heated mitt is put over the area.

However, if you have poor circulation, skin irritations such as, cuts, burns, warts or eczema, paraffin wax treatments are not recommended.

Washing The Hair of The Bedridden

Washing the hair of the bedridden can be quite a challenge. Years ago a basin would be held under the patient’s neck and pitchers of water would be poured over the head to wash and rinse the hair. Then, the invention of waterless shampoo’s came out. These products were great because it didn’t involve messy water issues.

a88

It has recently come to my attention of a great new way to wash the bedridden’s hair. It’s called a no rinse shampoo cap. It basically is a shower cap that has shampoo and conditioner in it. The cap can be heated or not. The no rinse cap is placed on the patients head and massaged in. It is amazing how clean and conditioned the hair comes out. I was very impressed.

Standing For a Living

As a long time hairdresser, I know what it’s like to stand for a living. Standing for a living causes a lot of body fatigue especially in your feet, knees, back and legs that can cause unsightly spider veins and varicose veins.

I’ve found, through experience that support hose, good shoes and an anti-fatigue mat help a lot!

Support hose these days don’t look like your grandmothers opaque stockings. Wearing support stockings can help improve circulation and energize your legs.

Most importantly, hairdressers or anyone else that stand for a living should always work with a good supportive shoe and an anti fatigue mat for posture and to help prevent  back, knee and foot pain.

If you take the precautions early on in your career you can help prevent spider veins and varicose veins and improve your energy.
