Lower Lid Mascara Smudge

We’ve all had it! Yes that Alice Cooper look at the end of the night! Here’s a tip to help with that problem of your bottom lashes smudging under your eyes.

Your lower lashes smudge more easily than your upper ones. So, if you are prone to smudging leave your bottom lashes bare or try this tip.  Wipe your mascara wand with a tissue and holding the wand vertically, go back and forth from the inner to the outer corners of your lower lashes.

Take a small fluffy shadow brush and dab across with translucent powder or a good makeup sealer up as close to the lash line as you can get. Works wonders!

Tweezers, Slant or Pointy, Which Is Best For The Job

Eyebrows, chin, upper lip, which tweezers are best for the job? What is the difference between a slanted tweezer or a pointed one?

slanted-tweezer

The slanted tweezer makes it easier to grasp and pluck in the direction of the hair growth, which helps reduce redness and soreness. Use slanted tweezers to target hair removal of the brow, chin or upper lip. Always remember when tweezing, stretch the skin then tweeze!

s t

Pointed tweezers are best to extract very short hairs for an easier access close to the skin.

Retin-A, Accutane and waxing do not agree! These products make skin too sensitive to wax and can cause serious skin irritation. It is extremely important, if you are using Retin A or Accutane, to tell your beautician you are using these products and they will choose a more subtle hair removal.

Hanging Christmas Stockings By The Fireplace and How It All Started

c7

How did hanging Christmas stocking’s by the fireplace all start? Well, it all begins with Saint Nikolaus, also known as Nikolaus Von Myra and Nikolaus of Bari. Born March 15, 270 and died December 6, 343. St. Nikolaus had a reputation of secret gift giving, putting coins in shoes of the poor who left them out for him. He eventually became the model for Santa Claus.

As legend has it, a recently widowed man and the father of three girls was poverty-stricken and was worried that their impoverished status would make it impossible for the girls to marry.

St. Nikolaus was wandering through the town where the man lived and heard the villagers discussing that family’s situation. St. Nikolaus wanted to help but knew the man would refuse any kind of charity directly. Instead, one night, St. Nikolaus slid down the chimney of the family’s house and filled the girl’s recently laundered stockings, which happened to be drying by the fire, with gold coins.

C 1

The girls awoke in the morning, overjoyed upon discovering the bounty. Because St. Nicholaus’ generosity, the daughters were now eligible to wed and their father could rest easy that they wouldn’t fall into lonely despair.

Although this story seems far-fetched, this tale of unknown origin and date is widely referenced when it comes to the history of the Christmas stocking.

There is a holiday commemorating St. Nikolaus on December  6th,  Saint Nicholas Day.

Men and Women Sick of Ingrown Hairs?

Ingrown hairs are the hardest thing to remove without destroying your skin by squeezing and trying to tweeze them out. Shaving and waxing are usually the culprit. Dead skin piles up around the hair follicle causing the hair to get trapped causing these nasty bumps called ingrown hairs.

ingrown hair 4

Men usually get ingrown hairs on the the neckline and face.

Women tend to get them in the bikini area and other places that they have  waxed.

Use a scrub and moisturize the skin everyday to prevent ingrown hairs. Make sure you use a scrub designed specifically for the face or the body.

If you have an ingrown hair, use a dab of scrub on a clean toothbrush, going gently back and forth over the area to loosen dead skin and it will make it easier to release the hair.

I think Tend Skin this is one of the best products on the market to combat the problem of ingrown hairs. If you are diligent with this product night and day, use a scrub and a moisturizer, then it will only take a day or two to release that hair.

Shampoo’s And What They All Mean. Which One Should I Choose?

It’s very confusing without the help of a professional to decide on what shampoo you should buy for your type hair. I did another blog post recently called ‘Choosing the right shampoo for your needs and budget”. In this post I talk a lot about sodium laurel sulfate. Trust me on this one, I’ve been a hairdresser for 34 years and that ingredient is a gig no-no in shampoo products, so you might enjoy reading about it. Here’s the link to it:

Choosing The Right Shampoo For Your Needs And Budget

2007_03_wf_shampoo

CLARIFYING-Uses ingredients designed to strip through the hairstyling products that are built up on the hair. Using monthly is something you should always do or when your hair is feeling flat or weighed down.

COLOR ENHANCING-These shampoo’s are used once a week to prevent your hair color from fading. They contain color depositing agents that rejuvenate your hair color in between visits to the salon and enhance the color from fading. Consult with a professional for choosing the best shade that matches your hair color. These shampoo’s are really awesome from keeping your hair from fading!

COLOR PROTECTIVE-These shampoo’s use less aggressive ingredients (like no sodium laurel sulfate) to prevent hair from drying out and fading hair color.

FAST DRYING-This type of shampoo limits the amount of moisture the hair absorbs, making drying time a lot quicker.

MOISTURIZING-Almost always has no sodium laurel sulfate adding the most moisture possible to dry hair.

pH BALANCED-Stops scalp from becoming to acidic or alkaline where bacteria can thrive causing irritation.

THICKENING SHAMPOO-These shampoo’s often use panthenol to thicken the hair shaft. Many also create an electrical charge within the hair to prevent strands of hair from sticking together, making hair look fuller.

VOLUMIZING-Using thickening and firming agents to create and left hair. Panthenol B5 penetrates the hair shaft causing it to swell and thicken. Check ingredients, a lot of volumizing shampoo’s are not color safe so be sure to check the ingredients before purchasing.

When in doubt always consult a professional when trying to decide which shampoo is best for your needs.

Nasty Bumps On The Back Of Your Arms?

Hate those bumps on the back of your arms? Want nice smooth skin?

armfrom this to thisarm 2

Those small bumps on the back of your arms and legs are caused when dead skin piles up around a hair follicle.  They’re especially common in the winter. The only way to rid these unwanted bumps is to exfoliate. Exfoliate with a nice body scrub and loofah every time you shower and most importantly, immediately follow with a thick moisturizer. You have to be diligent and bumps will disappear with in two weeks and your arms and legs will be soft as a baby’s bum….promise.

Here are my favorite moisturizers, a little pricey but I feel some of the best for this problem,

Barber’s Back In The Day

This is one of my favorite pictures I put in my photo Museum of Hair History on my website. Those were the days when a barber could ride around and do haircuts right out on the street! If anyone has a photo of anything old they would like to add to the museum please let me know. All contributions are welcome. I can’t help loving all the old beauty items of barbering and hairdressing. It’s a link to my profession’s past and I find it fascinating.

New Hair Coloring Trend…Vivids

With the Ombre waning in popularity a new hair color trend is emerging, bright vivids. Hair colors range from blues, purples, pinks, pastels and dimensionally multicolored. While they look fabulous and are quite a statement for today’s fresh new looks, unfortunately, they fade quite a bit and can be expensive to maintain. There are, however, products that can help keep the colors vibrancy while in-between touch-ups. Ask your hair stylist about these refreshing products. Here are some of my favorite looks of today.

Reading Suggestion

I put a ‘Reading Suggestions’page on my website because I wanted to write a list of all the books I thought went way beyond the call of duty, if you know what I mean. As any avid reader can tell you, when you read a lot it’s hard to remember the exact details to a book you’ve read over five years ago but, my list is the type of books that stay with you a while!

My latest entry is, We Need to Talk About Kevin by: Lionel Shriver.

Kevin 1Kevin 2

If a friend of mine didn’t practically hog tie me to read this book, I probably wouldn’t have because of the subject matter, mental illness and a killing spree. Not exactly top on my list of topics to read.

The day I opened the first page to this book was the last day I did a thing for a week until I finished the book.

It was the most twisted, most demented and most horrific book I have ever read but I could not put it down.

If you’re up for an eye view of what mental illness can do, you’ve got to read this. It’s ‘Reading Suggestions’ worthy.
