Water-proof vs Water-resistant Mascara

mascara

Water-proof mascara is really harsh on the lashes.  It coats the lashes and as it dries it shrinks around the lash.  This shrinking can cause breakage and lashes to fall out.  Waterproof is also a lot harder to remove resulting in more rubbing of the eye area.  Stick to water-resistant which is much easier on the lashes.

Beware of Salon Waxing!

wax pot

I’d like to share something totally disgusting but worth telling about, waxing at a salon.  I’ve been a hairdresser for thirty two years, (yikes that makes me sound old), a salon owner, a Board Certified Haircolorist and I’ve written a novel, Towel Dry and a Good Cry, about a hairdresser in the eighties.  I’m not bragging here I’m just showing that I know what I’m talking about on this subject.

One thing that grosses me out that happens in a salon and one of my biggest pet peeves is what happens in the waxing room in salons.  Not much grosses me out; I’m a plumber’s daughter, as well.  I can work on a head of hair that stinks to high heaven, a scalp full of psoriasis and a head full of stitches from a recent facelift but the one thing that really makes my skin crawl is ‘double dipping’ in the wax pot.

Every time a professional dips a waxing stick into the wax pot a new stick should be taken every time.  This doesn’t always happen.  The professional should take a new stick every time they dip. I personally don’t want to get my eyebrows done after someone has just had their ass waxed.

If you see a professional ‘double dipping’ the wax stick, do yourself a favor, “run Forrest run”!

The Zigzag Hair Part

zigzag 2

This is a little tip I’ve always given my clients in the salon.  This form of crisscrossing the hair part is beneficial for two reasons.  First, parting the hair in this way can create volume and second, lifting the hair with a little volume can also disguise the need for a color touch-up.

zigzag 1

Place the first tooth of a regular comb directly on the scalp.  Without lifting the comb off the scalp draw a zigzag line down the part area until the part is the right length.  Before lifting the comb off the scalp, separate the hair from the first tooth of the comb with your index finger.  There you go!

The Legend of the Easter Egg

For Christians, the Easter egg is the reminder of Jesus rising from His tomb and bringing new life.  The hard shell of the egg represents the sealed tomb of Christ and the inside of the egg, containing new life sealed within, represents His resurrection from the dead.

risen Christ

The Easter egg originated by Christians of Mesopotamia who stained the eggs red in memory of the blood of Christ shed at His crucifixion.  The Christian Church officially adopted the custom, regarding the eggs as a symbol of the resurrection in A.D. 1610.

Legend has it Mary Magdalene was bringing cooked eggs to share with the other women at the tomb of Jesus, and the eggs in her basket turned brilliant red when she saw the risen Christ.

Legend of the Lenten Pretzel

Pretzel

The pretzel, being symbolic of prayer and penance during Lent, is a small but powerful instrument in bring families to God.

Lent is a period of fasting and self-denial.  Praying, fasting and penance, at this time, is an imitation of our Lord’s fasting for forty days and forty nights in preparation for Easter.

In the Roman Empire the faithful kept a strict fast.  No milk, butter, cheese eggs, cream or meat were eaten during Lent.  They made small breads of water, flour and salt to remind them that Lent was a time for pray and penance.  They shaped these breads in the form of crossed arms for in those days they crossed their arms over the breast while praying.  They called the breads “little arms” (bracellae). From this Latin word Germanic people named them pretzels.

Many Christians follow this tradition with their children and I’ve included a little story of how Josie and her family celebrate this tradition in my sequel to Towel Dry and a Good Cry , Towel Dry and an Alibi, that I’m currently working on.

Happy St. Josephs Day

St. Joseph

I’m currently writing the sequel to my first novel Towel Dry and a Good Cry, entitled Towel Dry and an Alibi. In the story, Josie and her family are celebrating St. Josephs Day, a Christian holiday. Here is a direct quote from the sequel, (still untitled!).

There is a Catholic tradition my mother makes a big deal out of every year on March 19, St. Josephs Day. The focus of this holiday is on “St. Josephs Table,” a feast that includes breads, vegetables, egg dishes, pasta and desserts.  It’s like a Catholic Thanksgiving, to me.  Legend has it, during the medieval drought and famine, Sicilians prayed to St. Joseph, the patron of workers and the guardian of family. When the famine subsided, they attributed it to the saint and promised to honor him each year with a feast. The main pasta dish my mother always prepared was a meatless red sauce, (it’s Lent) with anchovies and topped with bread crumbs to represent the sawdust, a nod to the saint’s connection with the working man.

The Decollete’

One of my favorite beauty tips.

The decollete’ is the skin on the neck and chest area.decollete

This area is very delicate, has no fat, and shows all the telltale signs of aging such as dryness, wrinkles and sunspots.  Hydrating day and night in this area is very important in keeping the skin looking younger.  Use a cream facial wash instead of using soap or body washes.  Creams that are developed for your face will hydrate while cleansing.  Follow up with your facial moisture cream with sunscreen by day and night cream before bed..  Slather the moisturizer down the neck and across the decollete’ for maximum hydration.

Hair Dressed In A Pompadour

The pompadour is a man or woman’s style of hairdressing.  The idea is to create a mound in front of the hair.

The pompadour hairstyle dates back to the 1700’s and the evolution of it has lasted through to today’s hair fashion .

Marie A

Women wore the pompadour in the 1700’s and Marie Antoinette was a good example of how it was worn then.

The Guilded Age, 1877 to 1889, brought back the pompadour for women in the style of the Gibson Girl.

In the 1930’s and 40’s it re-emerged into the next phase of the pompadour and hollywood played a big role in that come-back.

And the best of all….Donald Trump

As a hairdresser of thirty some odd years, I used to cut hair into the pompadour when it was in style in the 80’s and I’m doing it all over again today.

In the novel I’ve written, Towel Dry and a Good Cry, the main character, Josie Capelli, a new to the business hairdresser in the early 80’s was doing the pompadour on her male clients.  My story walks you through what it’s really like to stand behind the chair of a hairdresser through Josie’s eyes and what it was like for her back then to do hair and deal with deep-rooted attachments to her clients, along with her crazy hairdresser best friend and her drama-filled, overbearing, overprotective, Catholic, Italian family.

Towel Dry and a Good Cry is a heartfelt story of truth, trust and love surrounded by a web of characters, some you’ll love, some you’ll hate and some will leave your jaw hanging open!

The Barber and The Barber Pole

red and white barber pole

Josie Capelli, the main character in my novel, Towel Dry and a Good Cry, had a grandfather that was a barber for over fifty years.  Josie learned a lot about the profession of hair from him.

Barbering is one of the oldest professions going back six thousand years.  A barber, back in the day, performed other things besides cutting hair and shaving.  It was common for a barber to pull a tooth or surgically do a bloodletting.  They were known then, as Barber Surgeons.

When barbers did bloodletting they rinsed the blood soaked cloths they were using and hung them in front of their businesses to dry.  The symbol of these stained white cloths waving in the wind became the reasoning behind the idea of a barber pole, symbolizing that a barber was on duty. The original barber pole had red and white stripes.  The barber pole that we know today has red white and blue stripes representing our country.

The story of the Candy Cane

In my novel, Towel Dry and a Good Cry, Josie’s mother is a woman steeped in tradition with deep religious roots she has tried to instill in all her children.  The story of the Candy Cane would have been a story she would have told at Christmastime, for sure.

candy cane

The Candy Cane Story

A candymaker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would remind people of the true meaning of Christmas; so he made the candy cane to incorporate several symbols for the birth, ministry, and death of Jesus Christ. He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. White to symbolize the Virgin Birth and the sinless nature of Jesus, and hard to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the Church, and the firmness of the promises of God.

The candymaker then shaped his cane into the form of a “J” to represent the precious name of Jesus, who came to the earth as Savior. It could also represent the staff of the “Good Shepherd” with which He reaches down to reclaim the fallen lambs who, like sheep, have gone astray.Manger

Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candymaker stained it with red stripes. He used three small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging Jesus received. The large red stripe was for the blood shed by Christ on the cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life.

Christmas Tree Trivia

Christmas Blog

I just learned something today I thought I’d share in light of the Christmas season.  Each year, 3.5 million American families bring real Christmas trees into their home.  This custom was first introduced in the United States in 1842, by Charles Minnegerode at Williamsburg, Virginia. His tree was described as “splendidly decorated” with strings of popcorn, gilded nuts and lighted candles. The 14th president of the United States, Franklin Pierce, was the first president to set up a Christmas tree in the White House.

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! It’s a time to be thankful for what we have, not think about what we don’t have. I was moved by this quote and thought it worthy of sharing.

“The Pilgrims made seven times more graves than huts. No Americans have been more impoverished than these who, nevertheless, set aside a day of thanksgiving.”

Veterans Day

Veterans Day is an official United States holiday that honors armed service veterans. Unlike Memorial day, which honors American service members who died in service to our country, Veterans Day pays tribute to all veterans, living or dead.  It’s a time to give thanks to all the living veterans who served our country during war and peace. We give thanks for the sacrifices that come with that job and the sacrifices their families and loved one’s have to endure.

I truly appreciate and thank all our U.S. Veterans including my husband, a USMC vet.

Pool Hustling

Josie Capelli and her four brothers loved to play pool and did their share of hustling, as depicted in my novel, Towel Dry and a Good Cry.

The most notorious figure in the history of pool is, Rudolph Wanderone, aka, Minnesota Fats.

Name and Legend::

Rudolph Luther “Minnesota Fats” Wanderone, Jr., a.k.a. “New York Fats”; “Fatty”, “The Bank Shot Bandit”, “The Fat One”, “Triple Smart”, “Dean of the Green”, “Double Smart Fats”, a.k.a. (??). A hustler of many names, Fats was an excellent pool player, though his skills did not qualify him as among the very best. His claim to fame was as a huckster and showman, earning him appearances on international television and in the Billiards Congress of America’s Pool Hall of Fame for “Meritorious Service”.

A Life of Legal Larceny:

In the late 1950’s, Fats settled down in Dowell, Illinois, near the site of the infamous Johnston City hustlers’ tournaments of the ’60s. Propelled by publicity he generated following the success of the movie, The Hustler, Fats hosted a television show, “Minnesota Fats Hustles the Stars” where he challenged Hollywood figures such as Zsa Zsa Gabor to games of pool (and talked incessantly to distract them if they started to defeat him!).

Fats quit playing in tournaments around that time and hustled pool plus made personal appearances at pool related events. He was inducted into Pool’s Hall of Fame in 1984.

Here is a clip of Jackie Gleason in  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TC3kqFUmqQ the movie, The Hustler.
