Margaret Vinci Heldt Creator of the Beehive Hairdo

I recently read the obituary of Margaret Vinci Heldt, the creator of the infamous Beehive hairdo. I love to commemorate the trail blazers of the Hairdressing profession.

mvh2

Margaret Vinci Heldt had been a salon owner when she won the National Coiffure Championship in 1954. The editors of Modern Beauty Shop Magazine asked Margaret if she would create a new hairdo for the up and coming season.

m9

While trying to be inspired in creating her new trend, Margaret Vinci Heldt spotted a hat of hers and got the inspiration she was looking for.

mvh5

Working on her mannequin, she teased and lacquered an updo in the shape of her hat and for an extra adornment she added a stick pin she had of a bee.

m7

When a reporter saw the final hairdo, he told Margaret that the hairdo reminded him of a beehive and asked if she minded if he called her new creation that.

In this photo taken Jan. 19, 2011, retired hairstylist Margaret Vinci Heldt, 92, is seen at her apartment in Elmhurst, Ill. Heldt developed "the beehive" hairdo when Modern Beauty Shop magazine was looking for a new design, something new and different to feature in its February 1960 issue. The black velvet hat on the table was the inspiration for the hairdo. (AP Photo/Caryn Rousseau)

The beehive today is still popular and worn by many celebrities. Later the beehive was also called the B-52 because of the resemblance in silhouette to the conical nose of the Boeing B-52 bomber airplane.

Margaret was one of the Cosmetology icons that deserve the remembrance and respect that she worked so hard for throughout her career.

Paraffin Wax Treatments

Paraffin wax treatments are beneficial to the skin in providing hydration. Paraffin wax is a mixture of hydrocarbons obtained from crude petroleum used to make candles, wax paper, lubricants and waterproof coatings.

Having a professional paraffin treatment can serve many benefits in hydrating dry skin. The wax works by locking-in moisture and the heat causes blood circulation and opens pores.p2

When doing the hands or feet the warmed wax is applied and a heated mitt is put over the area.

Washing The Hair of The Bedridden

Washing the hair of the bedridden can be quite a challenge. Years ago a basin would be held under the patient’s neck and pitchers of water would be poured over the head to wash and rinse the hair. Then, the invention of waterless shampoo’s came out. These products were great because it didn’t involve messy water issues.

It has recently come to my attention of a great new way to wash the bedridden’s hair. It’s called a no rinse shampoo cap. It basically is a shower cap that has shampoo and conditioner in it. The cap can be heated or not. The no rinse cap is placed on the patients head and massaged in. It is amazing how clean and conditioned the hair comes out. I was very impressed.

A Special Quote

Books 2.16.15

Often times when I am reading a book I will jot down a quote that I like. Recently I found this written on a small piece of paper wedged in the back of my desk drawer. I have no idea what book I wrote this down from, but I love what it says.

“Be proud of every scar on your heart. Each holds a life times worth of lessons.”

Standing For a Living

As a long time hairdresser, I know what it’s like to stand for a living. Standing for a living causes a lot of body fatigue especially in your feet, knees, back and legs that can cause unsightly spider veins and varicose veins.

I’ve found, through experience that support hose, good shoes and an anti-fatigue mat help a lot!

Support hose these days don’t look like your grandmothers opaque stockings. Wearing support stockings can help improve circulation and energize your legs.

Most importantly, hairdressers or anyone else that stand for a living should always work with a good supportive shoe and an anti fatigue mat for posture and to help prevent  back, knee and foot pain.

If you take the precautions early on in your career you can help prevent spider veins and varicose veins and improve your energy.

1930’s Type of Manicure, The Half-moon

In the 30’s women began to get professional manicures. One of the polish techniques that was popular at the time, made famous by Cutex, was the half-moon manicure which is popular today. The half-moon manicure was made popular by Hollywood. The half-moon and tip of the nail were left unpainted, showing the skill of a professional manicure. The idea stemmed from keeping enamel from the cuticle and the tip of the nail to avoid chipping.

The 1920’s Bob Haircut

After WWI there was a cultural change that followed among women. Flappers, the new breed of women, started wearing shorter skirts, wore more makeup, listened to Jazz music and lopped off their hair into the new Bob style.

Women flocked to barber shops to chop off their long locks often waiting in long lines to do so. Men were outraged by this invasion into their space, their place to guy talk and get a haircut and shave.

Although it was liberating for women to cut their hair into this new Bob style; they often cried and fainted at watching their long hair slide down the cutting cape.

Marie Laveau the Voodoo Queen and Hairdresser

Marie Laveau

There have been numerous stories told about Marie Laveau of New Orleans as the Voodoo Queen, sorceress, healer and psychic of the early 1800’s but, none have been historically documented. One thing we do know for sure is that Marie Laveau was a hairdresser which gave her privy to her clients lives and inner most secrets. Some of her ‘sorcery’ might have been just a hairdressers common sense and good old psychology that she used on her clients.

Marie Laveau 2

In my novel, Towel Dry and a Good Cry, I show how hairdressers use their good common sense and also the way’s in which they use psychology on their clients for a very healing experience as well as an exterior boost to their psyche.

Thanks to Angela Bassett’s depiction of Marie Laveau in American Horror Story, we are reminded of Marie Laveau’s life in New Orleans.

Wallace Stegner Famous Quote

Wallace Stegner is one of the greatest thought provoking writers of all time, and one of my favorite author’s.

I am terribly glad to be alive; and when I have wit enough to think about it, terribly proud to be a man and an American, with all the rights and privileges that those words connote; and most of all I am humble before the responsibilities that are also mine. For no right comes without a responsibility, and being born luckier than most of the world’s millions, I am also born more obligated. Wallace Stegner

Baby Fine Hair And What To Do With It!

This is, unfortunately,a subject I know all too well, baby fine hair. As a hairdresser,  I am always looking for new products and new ways to make my fine hair look thicker. Every morning when I am doing my hair I say, “I hate my hair”! Here’s what I’ve learned through experience with myself and my clients with baby fine hair. First off, I’m not talking about women that have balding issues or alopecia. For that there are many different medications, wigs, hairpieces and so many other things that woman have to choose from to help in that area of hair loss.

Baby fine hair should not be grown past the shoulders because it always looks weak and stringy. On a blond, the hair almost looks transparent. Blunt cuts work well.

hair 26or if the hair is a little finer on top a long layer shorter cut works well, too.hair 24There are so many cute shorter hairstyles that are very much ‘in’ today thanks to the pixie trend coming back into style. There are a lot of variations of the pixie cut to choose from. Your professional hairstylist is always the best one for advice on this. I even hate to mention this because, for many people it is frightful but, there is always a body perm. Perms have come a long way from the damaging your hair stand point. Sometimes I will perm just the underneath of someone with baby fine hair that has a bob to give volume underneath. There are many creative ways to perming these days than the scary 1980’s perms!

hair 29Comic-Con International 2012 -Walt Disney Studios: "Frankenweenie," "Wreck It Ralph" And "Oz" Press Linehair 32hair3r

As far as products go, with fine hair, even though it says on the bottle ‘gives volume’ etc. a lot of these products weigh our poor little baby fine hair down. I personally like gel. I apply it only at my roots for maximum root lift and I use a paste after it is dry to put some texture into the hair so it is not so soft.

A trick when blowdrying that baby fine hair of yours, tip your head upside down when drying and with the palm of your hand make circular motions one way and then in the opposite direction when drying the top part of your hair. These motions create a teased effect and adds even more body to the top of your hair.

Be weary of metal core brushes, for they can singe your baby hair. Bore bristle is the best and polishes some shine into your hair.
