Baby Fine Hair And What To Do With It!

This is, unfortunately,a subject I know all too well, baby fine hair. As a hairdresser,  I am always looking for new products and new ways to make my fine hair look thicker. Every morning when I am doing my hair I say, “I hate my hair”! Here’s what I’ve learned through experience with myself and my clients with baby fine hair. First off, I’m not talking about women that have balding issues or alopecia. For that there are many different medications, wigs, hairpieces and so many other things that woman have to choose from to help in that area of hair loss.

Baby fine hair should not be grown past the shoulders because it always looks weak and stringy. On a blond, the hair almost looks transparent. Blunt cuts work well.

hair 26or if the hair is a little finer on top a long layer shorter cut works well, too.hair 24There are so many cute shorter hairstyles that are very much ‘in’ today thanks to the pixie trend coming back into style. There are a lot of variations of the pixie cut to choose from. Your professional hairstylist is always the best one for advice on this. I even hate to mention this because, for many people it is frightful but, there is always a body perm. Perms have come a long way from the damaging your hair stand point. Sometimes I will perm just the underneath of someone with baby fine hair that has a bob to give volume underneath. There are many creative ways to perming these days than the scary 1980’s perms!

As far as products go, with fine hair, even though it says on the bottle ‘gives volume’ etc. a lot of these products weigh our poor little baby fine hair down. I personally like gel. I apply it only at my roots for maximum root lift and I use a paste after it is dry to put some texture into the hair so it is not so soft.

A trick when blowdrying that baby fine hair of yours, tip your head upside down when drying and with the palm of your hand make circular motions one way and then in the opposite direction when drying the top part of your hair. These motions create a teased effect and adds even more body to the top of your hair.

Be weary of metal core brushes, for they can singe your baby hair. Bore bristle is the best and polishes some shine into your hair.

Leonard Autie Hairdresser for Marie Antoinette

There are many forgotten hairstylists of the past that were pioneers in the beauty business. Their work has been the foundation of many ideas and innovations of future hairstyles to come. One of these pioneers was Leonard Autie, responsible for Marie Antoinette’s famous sky high hairdo’s.

Leonard Antie

His most important client, Marie Antoinette, the Queen of France in the late 1700’s, wore Leonard’s creations sometimes up to three-feet-high.

Léonard-Alexis_Autié_at_work_-_Bashor_2013_plate9

His hairdo’s were often accessorized with objects and decorations depicting current events. He took product usage to an extreme, using wire forms, wool, pomade and powder to create the gravity-defying, impractical designs.

 Marie A
His ‘pouf’ invention inspired an entire generation of looks throughout Europe and actually became one of the reasons his controversial client became infamous for her extravagance.

Autié’s success allowed him to establish a hair-dressing school and studio, the Académie de coiffeur (“a virtual House of Léonard”),[12] which was in Paris. He was joined in this enterprise by his two brothers, Pierre and Jean-François.

Stylists today are still influenced by his impressive designs. It’s  difficult to find any hairdresser mentioned in history books before Leonard.

Hanging Christmas Stockings By The Fireplace and How It All Started

Judy De Luca

c7

How did hanging Christmas stocking’s by the fireplace all start? Well, it all begins with Saint Nikolaus, also known as Nikolaus Von Myra and Nikolaus of Bari. Born March 15, 270 and died December 6, 343. St. Nikolaus had a reputation of secret gift giving, putting coins in shoes of the poor who left them out for him. He eventually became the model for Santa Claus.

As legend has it, a recently widowed man and the father of three girls was poverty-stricken and was worried that their impoverished status would make it impossible for the girls to marry.

St. Nikolaus was wandering through the town where the man lived and heard the villagers discussing that family’s situation. St. Nikolaus wanted to help but knew the man would refuse any kind of charity directly. Instead, one night, St. Nikolaus slid down the chimney of the family’s house and filled the girl’s…

Let’s Talk Turkey

Here’s a little Thanksgiving turkey talk to discuss around the table.

Did you know?

Thanksgiving became a national holiday all thanks to a woman named Sarah Hale. An American writer, the author of Mary had a Little Lamb, a poet and editor of a ladies magazine, The Godey’s Lady’s book.

sarahjhale

She hand wrote letters to congress for years to establish Thanksgiving as a national holiday.

Of the 102 original Pilgrims that came over on the Mayflower

only 50 survived to celebrate Thanksgiving. Five of those fifty were woman who served the meal.

We’ve all heard the term Tom Turkey in regard to the male turkey. How did that name come about? It seems Ben Franklin was upset with Thomas Jefferson when he refused to have the turkey as our National bird.

So Ben, mockingly called the turkey “Tom Turkey” after him.

In 1947 President Harry Truman started the annual tradition of pardoning a turkey.

The turkey, after its pardoning goes to a public farm in Herndon Virginia.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Don’t use body scrubs on your face!

Your out of facial scrub. Don’t be tempted to use a body scrub on your face! The skin on your body is not as delicate as the skin on your face. Body scrubs contain much larger, rougher granules than facial exfoliants and will only irritate and inflame your face. There are many home recipes for gentle facial scrubs that you can  make that are very cost efficient. Be kind to your face and always follow exfoliating with a good moisturizer.

Strange and Bizarre Beauty Habits of the 1600’s

Women had some strange beauty practices in the 1600’s!

In the mid 1600’s applying makeup or ‘painting’ had become part of the fashionable Lady’s routine which achieved a porcelain perfection and doll-like face. Painting the face and decolette with a face paint called ceruse was popular but not without consequences to all who used this paint because it was composed of a high quantity of lead. That high quantity of lead in the pigment not only corroded the skin but caused hair loss, a disaster for eyebrows and the hairline.1600's 1

Fortunately, the popular plucked hairline was fashionable but, eyebrows were more difficult to disguise. In 1700 a solution was found to the eyebrow issue with mice hide! The hide was cut to the desired shape and glued in place.

1600's hide1600's

A light dabbing of rouge on the cheeks was also applied. Not only were women using mice hide for eyebrows they were also using insects to create the rouge they wore. Red dye was made from the dried bodies of the female insect the cochineal. The rich scarlet dye   was moistened on Spanish wool and rubbed into the cheeks and lips.

Beauty spots or ‘patches’ were also worn and made of black silk or black velvet. Where the beauty spot was applied meant different ways to flirt depending of the placement of the patch.

In the corner of the eye: was for passion1600's 4

Situated at the corner of the mouth: was to show off a  pretty smile1600's 6

In the middle of the cheek: was to show gallantry

In the day’s of the 1600’s the patch or beauty spot came in handy to also cover small pox scars and moles.

Bedside Moisture

Here’s a great tip to do before bedtime! Lips can dry out during the night, especially if you breath through your mouth while sleeping or if your bedroom is too warm or dry. To keep lips soft and supple and line free, nourish them nocturnally. Keep lip balm on your night stand and give yourself a good swipe of it before night night!

14th Century Hair and Beauty

14th 4

Fourteenth century women wanted to be beautiful as well as fashionable. Few cosmetics were available and  women were shunned upon using them because it was considered vain and sinful. Fourteen century hair and beauty was regarded as a gift from God. Women conformed to this idealised standard of beauty, by stripping away their individuality rather than add to it.

14th century 3

Eyebrows were tweezed next to nothing for a look of delicateness and vulnerability.

14th century

The desire for a high forehead prompted ruthless plucking to bring the hairline up as far as the top of the head and the sides of the face were plucked clean to create an elongated oval look.

11th Century Women’s Hair History

Here’s a little 11th century hair history.

lady 3

During the eleventh century, early Christians set themselves against woman wearing any type of makeup or cosmetics; it was believed to be vain and sinful. The hair was the only acceptable expression of beauty that that could be done to enhance their femininity. Women grew their hair to their knees and created beautiful braids with their locks.

Myth or not, this cloak of femininity was never so utilized as when Lady Godiva made her first naked protest clothed only in her hair in 1057.

Lady Godiva 2

The eleventh century noblewoman was married to the Earl of Mercia and Lord of the Coventry. Lady Godiva pleaded with her husband to lessen the crippling taxes of the time. He agreed if she would ride horseback naked through the market square with only her hair to cover her.
