Barbershop Quartet Day July 13

quartet

Did you know July 13th is Barbershop Music Appreciation Day and is a day to relax and enjoy the sweet voices of a Barbershop Quartet or the Sweet Adelines?Barbershop Harmony is four part, unaccompanied, close harmony singing. In most cases, barbershop music is taken from 20th (and 21st!) century popular music.

It can be sung by a quartet, with each singer singing her own part, or by larger groups of anything up to 200 singers – still singing in four parts. Barbershoppers do more than just sing…they entertain!

Edna Mae Anderson of Tulsa, Oklahoma invited some women to her home to sing on July 13, 1945. Their husbands were members of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). The ladies wanted to participate in the singing fun and enjoyment. On that evening, the “Sweet Adelines” were born. The group later became Sweet Adelines International., which now boasts hundreds of groups and thousands for members.

July 13th is a great day to listen to barbershop music.

The Origin of Barbershop Music Appreciation Day:

Barbershop Music Appreciation Day was created in 2005 by Sweet Adelines International. It was started to mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of their organization. This organization boasts over 300 choruses, and 15,000 singers.

An Italian Wedding Tradition

I was reminded of an old Italian Wedding tradition recently after attending my nephews wedding and thought I would pass this on. Each guest received a gift of five sugar coated almonds with a note attached.

wedding favor

The note on this Italian wedding tradition said:  “Five sugared almonds for each guest to  eat, to remind us that life is both bitter and sweet. Five almonds represent five wishes for the new bride and groom–health, wealth, happiness, children and a long life!”

How To Cover Greasy Blond Roots

Here’s a cheap little trick to help your greasy blond roots.

p15

Using talc powder can make blond hair hair look gray and dull.

p14

Dig in that makeup bag of yours and try using some loose powder on a makeup brush to dab those greasy roots with. The color of the powder is likely to be closer to the color of both your scalp and hair and will help soak up the excess oil on those greasy blond roots.

Do I Really Need Separate Day and Night Creams?

s78Do you really need separate day and night creams? The answer is yes! Day creams provide a barrier to moisture loss, protect against sun and environmental damage, and work in tandem with your make-up. The role of a night cream is different.

s99

Richer in texture, a night cream usually contains higher concentrations of active ingredients designed to repair the skin while you sleep and a day cream won’t give you that full replenishing benefit for night time.

Want To Stop Mascara From Clumping?

mascara

Here’s a little tip I heard a long time ago about stopping mascara from clumping and I do this everyday.

Never pump the wand in and out of the tube. As air gets inside, it dries out the liquid leaving you with clumpy mascara.

Always wipe away any clumps of mascara on the wand to be certain of clump free lashes.

Glued Shut Nail Polish Top? Easy Fix

4566666

How many times have we bought the perfect nail polish color only to find after a few uses the top has been glued shut from the caked on polish. In the past, I’ve tapped the top on the counter, soaked under hot water and even used pliers to get the polish to open.

Here’s a neat trick that really works. Put a little petroleum jelly around the grooves of the bottle and the cap. If you do this every so often you’ll never be frustrated again trying to get the cap off. It really works!

From The Farrah Haircut To The Bi-level aka Mullet Haircut

I set the time of my ebook, Towel Dry and a Good Cry, in the late seventies and early eighties because it was a crazy time for hair and I was a working hairdresser through it all! In this scene, Josie, the main character, attends the New York International Hair Show. There she learns all the newest trends, including the latest rage in haircutting, the Bi-level aka the Mullet. Until this new trend women wore their hair in the Farrah, long, full, permed and feathered back.

Farrahmullet

This is the scene from Towel Dry and a Good Cry:

Further down the row I was in, I saw a crowd gathering. A mini stage was set up, and a haircut was going on. The bi-level. I was trying to concentrate on every snip. Someone dressed in black with a headset microphone said to me, “Excuse me. Do you mind if I feel your hair? I’m Michael, with the cutting team.”

“Go for it.”

He ran his fingers through my hair and began scrunching it. “You have the perfect hair for this cut. Would you be my model for it?”

“Really? When, now?”

“Right now.”

I had to make a split-second decision. I thought it would be crazy and fun.

An assistant escorted me to a private area. Lots of models were running around in their underwear trying to find what they were supposed to be wearing. Makeup artists were applying, and assistants were washing colors out and blow drying. I was caped, shampooed, and brought up to the stage.

“What was your name again, darling?” he whispered.

“Josie.”

“This is Josie, everyone. She’s about to let me cut off some serious hair.”

Gulp.

bloodletting This was the tool that Barbers used to do bloodletting with.

Barbering is one of the oldest professions going back six thousand years.  A barber, back in the day, performed other things besides cutting hair and shaving.  It was common for a barber to pull a tooth or surgically do a bloodletting.  They were known then, as Barber Surgeons.

Tricks For Using Velcro Rollers

37777

Velcro rollers provide soft curl, root lift and can be used on damp or dry hair. The beauty of the Velcro roller is that the hair is not subject to heat abuse and is a quick easy way to spruce up your hair, especially if you don’t want to wash your hair. Velcro rollers can be applied to dry hair and sprayed with hairspray and left to set while applying makeup or dressing.36666

Another choice, especially for fine, curly or dry brittle hair is to wind the rollers on dry hair before taking a shower and the steam will help set the curls for a long lasting, conditioning style when you remove them.

For a loose long hair style, put hair up in a high pony and roll the ends up.
